Why Dive Tenggol?

Tenggol Island sits off the coast of Dungun, Terengganu. It's a protected marine park with over 30 dive sites ranging from shallow coral gardens to walls and pinnacles. You can expect to spot sea turtles, reef sharks, rays, and hundreds of tropical fish species — all in exceptional visibility.

Two Brands, One Journey

The One Tenggol Resort handles your island experience — accommodation, guided dives, and SSI courses. De Blue Corner in Petaling Jaya handles your dive equipment— whether you're renting a regulator before your trip or buying your first mask and fins.

Gear Guide — What to Bring to Tenggol

Rent vs Buy: The Beginner's Checklist

Not sure what gear to bring? Rent high-quality regulators and BCDs from De Blue Corner in PJ or buy your first mask & fins here. Here's exactly what you need.

Must Buy — Personal Items

These should be yours. Fit and hygiene matter.

Mask & Snorkel

Fit is very personal — no two faces are the same. A poorly fitting mask leaks constantly. Get fitted in person at De Blue Corner PJ before your trip.

Tip: Low-volume masks are easier to clear and equalise for beginners.

Fins

Open-heel fins with neoprene booties offer the best fit and comfort. Ill-fitting rental fins cause blisters and fatigue on every kick.

Tip: Choose soft or split-blade fins as a beginner — they require less effort.

Rashguard or Shorty Wetsuit

Tenggol water is warm (27–30°C), so a 3mm shorty or a rashguard is all you need for sun, abrasion, and mild stings.

Tip: A full rashguard is enough for most divers in Tenggol. Wetsuits optional.

Rent at Resort — Heavy Gear

Save luggage space. Rent these at Tenggol or De Blue.

BCD (Buoyancy Control Device)

BCDs are bulky to travel with and expensive. High-quality BCDs are available at The One Tenggol Resort. Rent until you know your preferred style.

Tip: Ask staff to ensure the BCD fits your chest — sizing matters for buoyancy.

Regulator

Regulators are serviced and maintained at the resort. De Blue Corner in PJ also offers regulator rental for training dives before your trip.

Tip: Never use a regulator that has not been serviced within the past 12 months.

Dive Computer

Track depth, dive time, and no-decompression limits. Rent at the resort or buy a beginner-friendly model at De Blue Corner.

Tip: Suunto Zoop and Mares Puck are popular, affordable starter computers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions from Beginner Divers in Malaysia

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to scuba dive?

You need to be comfortable in the water, but you don't need to be a strong swimmer. For Discover Scuba Diving (DSD), basic water comfort is enough. For SSI Open Water certification, you'll need to swim 200 metres unassisted. Staff at The One Tenggol Resort will assess your comfort in the water before any dive.

What is the minimum age to scuba dive in Malaysia?

Children aged 10 and above can take the SSI Junior Open Water Diver course. Discover Scuba Diving is also available from age 10. There is no upper age limit — adults of any fitness level are welcome at Tenggol Island.

Should I buy or rent my scuba gear for Tenggol?

As a beginner, rent the heavy items — BCD, regulator, and dive computer — from the resort or De Blue Corner PJ. However, it's worth buying your own mask and fins since fit is very personal. De Blue Corner can professionally fit you before your trip.

When is the best time to dive Tenggol Island?

The best diving season at Tenggol Island runs from March to October. Visibility peaks between May and September, often exceeding 20 metres. The island closes to visitors from November to February due to the northeast monsoon season.

What marine life will I see at Tenggol?

Tenggol is home to sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, whale sharks (seasonal), giant groupers, lionfish, nudibranchs, seahorses, and an enormous variety of tropical reef fish. Dive conditions are generally calm, making it excellent for beginner divers.

How do I get to Tenggol Island from Kuala Lumpur?

From KL, drive or take a bus to Dungun, Terengganu — approximately 4 to 5 hours by road. The One Tenggol Resort arranges boat transfers from Dungun Jetty to the island, which takes around 45 minutes. The resort can advise on the best bus and transfer options.
